Our trip through India started
in Delhi. From there we went
by plain on an excursion to Varanasi
(Benares) (800 km), the most important place of pilgrimage in Hinduism.
After returning to Delhi we started our long tour through the country to
Udaipur by car. The first break was Agra
with the Red Fort and the famous Taj
Mahal (203 km). After that we left the state of Uttar Pradesh and went
to Jaipur, the capital
of Rajasthan (232 km). On the road we visited Fathepur Sikri,
the
"left city" and the national park Bharatpur. Close to Jaipur is the Amber
Fort,
which we climbed by elephant. On our way to Jodhpur
with the majestic and most impressive Mehrangarh
Fort
(331 km) we went on a small excursion to Pushkar,
another place of pilgrimage for Hindus. Coming from Jodhpur we passed the
Thar desert in the direction of Udaipur. On the road, close to Udaipur,
we visited the magnificent
Jain-Temple in Ranakpur, which is in any case a "must". Finally
we reached the fairytale "city of lakes", Udaipur
(266 km). From there we went by plain to Mumbai (Bombay) (800 km)
and by train to Pune
(Poona) (163 km), which is also known
as the cultural capital of Maharashtra. Finally we left India from Mumbai.
