The
Bryce Canyon is another spectacular example of erosion of breathtaking
beauty. Erosive forces as well as ancient rivers and basins have formed
a remarkable arrangement of fantastic shapes and changed colorful Claron
limestone, sandstone
and mudstone into a maze of thousands of strange figures, like spires,
fins and some of them looking like people - the well known "Hoodoos".
The fantastic rock creations have fascinated all cultures and so now. The
original inhabitants in South Utah, the Paiutes, looked upon the colorful
"Hoodoos" as "Legend People" who were turned to stone by Coyote.
The rock formations of the Bryce Canyon began to develop about 144 million
years ago. The "Pink Cliffs" became their reddish colour when iron rich,
limy sediments were deposited in the beds of a series of lakes and streams
between 66 and 40 million years ago. |
