The Hermitage is a museum of art and culture. The architectural ensemble consists of six historic buildings, the dominating part of which is the Winter Palace (1754-1762), the former state residence of the Russian emperors. It is one of the largest and oldest museums in the world, including more than three million works of art and artefacts of the world culture. It was founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great and has been open to the public since 1852. |
