Basilica San Vitale

Italy Ravenna, Basilica San Vitale with its famous mosaics
UNESCO World Heritage

The church was begun in 526 and in 547 consecrated to Saint Vitalis. It is one of the most important examples of late antique and early Byzantine art and architecture.
The basilica is primarily famous for its abundance of elaborate mosaics, particularly for the two portraits of Justinian and his wife Theodora in the lower Apsis.
